Nineteenth‐century mortality trends: A reply to Szreter and Mooney

In a recent article in this journal I challenged Szreter and Mooney's account of mortality crisis English industrial manufacturing cities the period c. 1830–1850. argued, first, that there was no robust evidence for major fall urban life expectancies period; second, rise early childhood, but occurred rural as well populations, persisted until 1860s; third, an increase virulence scarlet fever made contribution to rise. Mooney contested these conclusions on two main grounds: my methodology estimating differed from theirs; geography chronology patterns did not fit those childhood mortality. Here demonstrate criticisms are invalid. Using their still find dramatic drop 1830s–40s. also present new cause by late 1830s 1840s, could therefore observed period.
